David Boies reminded us all that “We, the People” doesn’t mean “We, the white People” or “We, the rich People” or “We, the male People” even though the folks who wrote those words where white and rich and male. And, by the way he tells it, this whole Prop 8 thing will be a thing of the past soon enough.

But Sen. Robert Casey brought down the house when he pledged to introduce the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) to the Senate this week.

SSIA has already been introduced in the house, and it’s fighting its way through a number of committees while teenagers around the country continue to be bullied because they’re gay, or they look gay, or they don’t look straight enough. So Sen. Casey’s pledge couldn’t have come at a better time.

SSIA mandates schools “adopt sexual orientation and gender identity or expression language in existing anti-bullying policies that specifically cover sexual orientation, gender identity and expression as well as require states to include bullying and harassment data in the statewide needs assessments.”
